“Modique” is French for small and modest.
In the summer of 2018, I was invited to help run a Raku workshop in Taos, New Mexico, where I live. On a whim, I sculpted small versions of my larger work that I call “Beasts”. The resulting effect became an unexpected and delightful creative collaboration with fire. I sculpted and glazed, and the flames and smoke did the rest. The results were so rewarding that I became inspired to fulfill this limited – edition series.
For the Modique Fire Paintings, I paint with glaze onto the 2 inch bisque tile and then let the raku process do the rest. Finished tiles are placed into wooden frames. I hand-make each frame from miniature doll house trims – 3 different designs glued together to create the final style and then each is hand-painted.
